Being raised by a single parent in Indianapolis and living on welfare didn’t allow his family the ability to afford a lot of things, but they always had a radio. Will would wake up to Gospel and go to sleep listening to R&B, Funk, Jazz, etc. This helped spark his love for music and a yearning to release the sounds that seemed to always be in his head.
He found himself humming music in class while doing classwork and once got reprimanded with a ruler because of it. As a 4th grader he was offered the opportunity to join the school band and each student had to pick a school provided instrument. He wanted to play the trumpet but by the time his turn came up the only choices were the baritone and the trombone. He picked the trombone and spent the rest of his elementary and high school years playing this instrument in, school until his mom bought him a tiny Casio calculator keyboard for one of his birthdays. That was the start of his love of keyboards and the search for his musical voice. Phil Wood, his first keyboard mentor, sold him a Korg Poly 800 which was his first professional keyboard. He would use it for several years with his college choir, Black Voices of Inspiration, to play keyboard bass.
Over the years, he has had many keyboards and played for various choirs, ministries, and events while trying to find a way to release the music pounding away inside. To that end, he has taken music classes, experimented, and practiced in his home studio to help him compose all the songs and play all the instruments on his first album. From this, Phalanges: The Evolution of Mr. W.E. was born.
It has been a family affair with his wife as the photographer and clothing consultant, to both his daughters serving as production assistants who listened and critiqued each track, to his team of friends who provided feedback on their favorite songs that were being considered for the album.
